There is a common misconception about rubber rug pads that they are dangerous for hardwood floors. When most people think of a rubber rug pad, they refer to the mesh looking rug pads that are found packaged in most major stores. Well, the truth of the matter is that these mesh looking rug pads are actually not rubber, but plastic, and they are the ones that damage hardwood and many types of floors.

Super Hold is an all natural, untreated rubber rug pad safe for use on all hardwood floors.

Plastic, or PVC, rug pads are the most common and most popular types of rug pads available in stores today. They are mass produced in China, folded and packaged and shipped to the USA to hang in stores. These rug pads have a mesh like design and look and feel like rubber, hence the reason why many people think they are rubber. They are coated with an adhesive that is meant to prevent slipping, yet this adhesive also melts to and damages hardwood floors. So, this is why there is the misconception that a rubber rug pad will damage hardwood floors.

Natural, untreated rubber rug pads are probably some of the safest types for hardwood floors. They provide natural non slip properties without the risk of damage to the floor. Unfortunately, due to cost, rubber rug pads were more popular years ago and have become overwhelmed by the imitation plastic versions from China. So, for those looking for the real thing, it has become harder to find. Most stores prefer the lower priced option that is already packaged in various sizes, a much easier method than spending more money on actual rolls of rubber that need to be cut to order.

Fortunately for us, there are a very few select stores that actually refuse to offer plastic and insist on rubber rug pads. These are still the mesh looking rug pad design, yet made of only 100% natural rubber. Rug Pad Corner manufactures a Super Hold all natural rubber that is not treated with any adhesives and is completely safe for the floor. Super Hold is an open weave construction and is popular for use on all types and finished of hardwood floors. The company offers it in all sizes and shapes, while it is more popular under smaller rugs or hallway runners. Super Hold is a full 1/8″ thick, so it adds more comfort than the thinner mesh plastic rug pads.

The next time you desire a rubber rug pad, as long as you know it is real rubber made in the USA and not treated with any chemicals or adhesives, you can comfortably use it on your hardwood floor. The rubber rug pad will prove to prevent your rug from slipping, prevent damage to your floor and protect your rug from premature wear and damage.
